"This image characterizes the release properties of degrading polymer microspheres in phosphate buffer. The pores seen inside and on the surface of the microspheres are important for the release of encapsulated drug, which in this case is a protein. The beautiful crystals seen on the background and on the microsphere surface are formed from the phosphate salts during the drying step used for SEM preparation."
