Labeling the Landscape in the Hippocampus

Glia play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in the brain and supporting the functioning of neurons. A complex network of inflammatory and neurodegenerative responses, coupled with amyloid beta deposits, tau tangles, and oxidative stress characterize Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Activation and proliferation of microglia and astrocytes are important in the inflammatory response, which ultimately affects disease progression. Here, microglia (yellow), astrocytes (magenta), blood vessels (green), and nuclei (blue) are captured in the CA1 region of the hippocampus, which is important in learning and memory.
