Genetic screens can help researchers characterize the functions and roles of many genes that are likely to affect a disease progression or therapeutic outcome. This image shows a pool of genetically modified neurons (a nerve cell) derived from human stem cells. A unique set of three colors from 7 channels (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet) represents different barcodes for identifying genetic background, resulting in a visual appearance of 20 different colors. This approach enables researchers to identify which genes were knocked down in each cell and study their effect on cellular health and neuronal morphology.
