This image taken is an imaging ‘phantom’ or synthetic tissue used to calibrate magnetic resonance imaging instruments (MRIs). Phantoms are critical tools for developing medical imaging techniques when it is less feasible to use human subjects. The Cima Lab in the Koch Institute is developing a portable magnetic resonance (MR) device. The device is being tested for use to detect fluid status in patients in both in-patient and out-patient clinical settings. The phantom consists of an oil in water emulsion, it took a significant amount of time, error, and experimentation to develop the correct procedure.
