This image was obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To prevent electrical charging, the sample was first sputtered with a nanoscale layer of gold.  The image gives detailed information about an implant’s structure on multiple length-scales, which also helps us to learn more about the self-assembly mechanism.
