"This image shows a community of E. coli forming what is known as a biofilm. The cells grow as a multicellular assemblage and form complex architectures. I was studying various structural components of E. coli biofilms and some earlier findings led me to investigate the roles of certain matrix genes by generating mutants. I combined one particular mutant with wild-type cells and together, they formed the largest biofilm I’d yet seen. This is an image of one of the tallest parts of the biofilm."
