The image depicts a fruit fly testis containing sperm at different developmental stages. The protein shown in green can preferentially kill sperm containing the Y-chromosome, though this gene is encoded on the X-chromosome. The image shows that this protein begins to express very early during sperm development and eventually localizes to only a subset of sperms after meiosis, indicating that the protein might undergo asymmetric segregation during meiosis.
